The project aimed to strengthen the participation of COMESA Member States in the World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations and to promote and defend their rights and commercial and economic interests.
A capacity building workshop took place in Nairobi, Kenya, with the participation of two government representatives of each COMESA country.
The workshop was intended to:
1. Improve the understanding of the issues under negotiation in the WTO;
2. improve the ability to identify business opportunities and prepare proposals to the WTO bodies;
3. improve the understanding and analytical skills of government staff, in order to contribute to the strategic decision-making on trade policy;
4.promote the establishment of trade points to disseminate business and trade opportunities that may result from negotiations.
The areas focused include international trade of agricultural products, non-agricultural market access (NAMA) and trade in services.
